Before you go

Before you hit the trails, ask yourself if you're ready for the challenges that lie ahead? Wellington Park's trail running terrain is often very steep, loose and rocky, and may lead you through dense scrub. The weather can change quickly, so be prepared for sudden shifts in conditions. Assess your capabilities and make sure you're up for the adventure. Here are some tips to make the most of your experience:

  • Check the Trail Difficulty: Some trails are more challenging than others, so choose one that matches your fitness and experience level.
  • Carry Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, a trail map, and a fully charged phone in case of emergencies. Remember that batteries do not last as long in cold conditions, so consider taking a battery pack or spare.
  • Download the Emergency+ app and know how to use it so you can give critical location info to emergency   services in the event of an accident.
  • Respect Nature and Heritage: Remember that you're running through a natural and culturally significant area, so stay on marked trails and leave no trace behind.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear proper footwear and comfortable clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Trails in the park can be very slippery, particularly in shade, snow and ice.
  • Check Weather Conditions: Weather can be unpredictable and change quickly.  Check the forecast before heading out. Be willing to reschedule if necessary.
  • Inform Someone: Share your trail running plan and estimated time of arrival/return with a reliable person,  , and consider checking in at agreed points along the way.
  • Run with Companions: It's best to have at least one companion with you, preferably 2-3, for added safety.
  • Use a Checklist: Create a checklist to ensure you have all the necessary gear (see below) before setting out.
  • Hone your Navigation Skills: Trail running in Wellington Park demands good navigation skills. Familiarize yourself with using a map and compass or a GPS device. Ensure your mobile phone has GPS capabilities, and practice using it confidently before setting off. Keep in mind that mobile phone GPS apps work off satellites, so they can function even where mobile reception drops out.

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. Trail running in Wellington Park requires moderate experience, fitness, and knowledge. It's essential to consider all members of your party and be well-prepared before embarking on this exhilarating journey.
