Statement from the Trust

Release of the Tasmanian Government's 'Our Mountain's Future' Action Plan

The Wellington Park Management Trust welcomes the release of the Our Mountain’s Future Action Plan.

The document will now be reviewed in detail before the Trust comes together to discuss findings.

“We note that immediate change is not expected due to the need for legislative change” said Dr Christine Mucha, Chair of the Wellington Park Management Trust.

“The Trust will continue to exercise its statutory management authority role during what may be an extended transition period.”

“The Trust is pleased that, on first pass, the review findings acknowledge the suite of issues raised by the Trust in its written submission and subsequent consultation. Those issues include Palawa representation, land tenure complications and funding,” said Dr Mucha.

“We note the intention to address these challenges and build on the good work of the Trust and its member agencies over the past 33 years.”

The Wellington Park Management Trust looks forward to working with the Tasmanian Government, the Palawa community and relevant agencies to enable change for the benefit of Wellington Park.

For Wellington Park to be a special place, accessible and enjoyed by all for its prominent landscape, natural and cultural diversity, and community value

Wellington Park Management Trust

The Wellington Park Management Trust is an independent management authority set up under the Wellington Park Act 1993. Membership of the Trust is specified in the Act, and comprises an independent Chair together with the Director-General of Lands, the Director of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and the CEO of Tourism Tasmania (or their nominees), plus 2 nominees of City of Hobart, and 1 nominee from each of Glenorchy City Council and TasWater.

The Trust is responsible for managing and protecting the diverse natural and cultural heritage values of Wellington Park, and for enforcing the Wellington Park Regulations 2019. The Park comprises 14 separate land parcels owned by the Crown, City of Hobart and Glenorchy City Council. The Trust's role is one of strategy and regulation, in partnership with on-ground management undertaken by the land owners.

The Trust develops and periodically updates the Wellington Park Management Plan, a statutory document that provides for sustainable opportunities for recreation and tourism where consistent with the conservation of environmental, cultural and water catchment values of the Park. The current Management Plan, released in 2013 and amended in 2015, is now being reviewed.
