East West Trail - major works May-June

The PWS is conducting grading and re-sheeting works along the East West Trail from May-June. These are necessary maintenance works required for this critical fire trail. Pedestrians and riders are advised to take care, heed all signs and follow the directions of workers when in the vicinity of works sites. The Recreational 4WD permit season is now closed, and will re-open in late 2025.

Abseiling and rock climbing are prohibited at The Springs Lookout. The new balustrade is not rated for this use, and ropes spanning the lookout footprint impede access by visitors. This restriction applies to all users, including school groups and commercial operators.

There is a hole in the Pipeline Track surface at a culvert over the Levert Rivulet (approx 42.945955 S, 147.230185 E). This section of track is outside of Wellington Park. The track remains open to riders and pedestrians, but has been closed to maintenance vehicles pending assessment and repair.

Pinnacle Road traffic data

Annual traffic data

The Trust uses the ATLYST platform to assess traffic counter data that has been collected by the City of Hobart since May 2014. The traffic counter records vehicle counts, speed, direction and vehicle class.

Busiest days on Pinnacle Road

Peak traffic on Pinnacle Road occurs on weekends and public holidays, which consistently experience almost twice as much traffic as week days. The highest daily traffic counts often correspond to significant natural events (heavy snowfall, aurora activity) or holidays including New Year's Eve, Christmas Day and Easter. Six of the top 20 busiest days on Pinnacle Road occurred in 2024.

Recreational Trail Network usage

The Wellington Park Management Trust and Park Management agencies have deployed a network of 44 track counters across the recreational trail network in Wellington Park. Some of these are permanent placements, whilst a small number of counters are moved around the Park to collect seasonal or sample usage data. This data is important in monitoring visitor dispersal across the Park, and to inform trail maintenance requirements.

During 2024, new counters were installed to record use on the Tolosa Fire Trail, Strickland Falls, Mt Connection and the Knights Creek Trail. Once there is a sufficient data record, figures for these trails will be included in summary data. Counters placed at the Octopus Tree and Myrtle Forest are also recent installations, hence the absence of 2023 data.
