The Zig Zag Track restoration project will make the track a safer walking route while maintaining its important heritage values and bush feel.
Alternative access to the summit for walkers during this project will be available via Milles Track, Icehouse Track, and South Wellington Track, but note this is a harder and longer route than the Zig Zag Track and better suited to more experienced walkers.
The Zig Zag Track is closed for Stage 2 of track restoration works until mid-2023.
Rocky Wheel'n and Free Wheel'n tracks will close on 19 May to allow new gravel to be spread and compacted before expected rainfall in the next week. Watch this space for updates.
UPDATE ON THE GLENORCHY MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK MASTERPLAN
Dirt Art has been awarded a tender to carry out major refurbishment works in the Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park. The Park is the oldest mountain bike park in Australia, but has had it’s wear and tear over the years. The works will return it to its full glory and more. Click the link in the heading to learn more about this landmark development.
Work got under way in April and is now well advanced, so the entire singletrack network is now closed to riders and pedestrians, but the fire trails remain open.
You can still access the North South Track in both directions, however the sections below Five Ways are closed so please use the fire trails. Signage and maps have been installed to help with wayfinding.
Some visitors have already chosen to push through barriers and ignore signage and have left ruts on fragile new surface works, which were laboriously finished by hand and now have to be redone at considerable waste of time and money and effort, which could all be spent finishing the project sooner so we can all get out there and enjoy the new trails.
The Ranger and Authorised Officers will be patrolling randomly during the week and on weekends. This is your warning. If you are found on a closed track in contravention of a sign you will be fined on the spot $271.50, just as numerous riders and pedestrians were on the Wheel'n Tracks and the Zig Zag Track in the Hobart area in recent months.
Thank you to the majority of visitors who respects the work of the trackies and have the patience and consideration of others to keep off the tracks while under construction.
