Track and Fire Trail Closures

Abseiling prohibited - Springs Lookout

Abseiling prohibited - Springs Lookout

Abseiling prohibited - Springs Lookout

Abseiling and rock climbing are prohibited at The Springs Lookout. The new balustrade is not rated for this use, and ropes spanning the lookout footprint impede access by visitors. This restriction applies to all users, including school groups and commercial operators.

Pipeline Track - caution needed

Abseiling prohibited - Springs Lookout

Abseiling prohibited - Springs Lookout

There is a hole in the Pipeline Track surface at a culvert over the Levert Rivulet (approx 42.945955 S, 147.230185 E). This section of track is outside of Wellington Park. The track remains open to riders and pedestrians, but has been closed to maintenance vehicles pending assessment and repair.

Pinnacle Road traffic data

Annual traffic data

The Trust analyses traffic counter data that has been collected by the City of Hobart since May 2014. The traffic counter records vehicle counts, speed, direction and vehicle class.

Although total vehicle entries decreased in 25-26, half of the top 20 busiest days on the road occurred during this year, including a new record for busiest day when 1,906 vehicle entered the Park on 6 September following heavy snowfall.

Pinnacle Road closures

Overnight closures

Overnight closures

Overnight closures

Pinnacle Road was closed for 95 nights due to snow and ice in 2025-26. The highest number of closures occurred in August (22 nights), followed by October (19) and July and September (both with 18).

The road can be closed at the Park entrance (Bracken Lane) or above The Springs (680m above sea level). The summit of Kunanyi  / Mount Wellington is not accessible by private vehicle during both types of closure.

Road closure data is obtained by monitoring the City of Hobart's Pinnacle Road Status website.

Daytime closures

Overnight closures

Overnight closures

Overnight closures extended into the daytime (after 9.30am) on 46 days in 2025-26. On these days, the road was open to the summit by 11.30am on 21 days and by 2.30pm on 11 days.

The summit of Kunanyi / Mount Wellington was not accessible by private vehicle on 14 days during 2025-26. Vehicle access to The Springs was possible on all but one of the road closure days.

All tracks and trails in Wellington Park remain open during road closures. The privately-operated Snow Bus service operates tours to the snow above the road closure gates.

Recreational Trail Network usage

The Wellington Park Management Trust and Park Management agencies have deployed a network of track counters across the recreational trail network in Wellington Park. Some of these are permanent placements, whilst a small number of counters are moved around the Park to collect seasonal or sample usage data. This data is important in monitoring visitor dispersal across the Park, and to inform trail maintenance requirements.
