Drinking Water Catchment Management

Up to 20% of the drinking water for the Greater Hobart area is sourced from catchments in Wellington Park.

Teh Wellington Park Act 1993 sets aside the Park for a number of purposes including "the protection of the water catchment values of the land".  The main drinking water catchments in the Park have been designated Drinking Water Catchment Zones in the Wellington Park Management Plan 2013 to ensure that they are well managed to provide high quality water that requires minimal treatment.

The Wellington Park Managment Trust and TasWater jointly manage these catchment areas to protect the quality and quantity of water harvested from the Park. This includes designating sensitive parts of drinking water catchments as Restricted Areas which visitors require a permit to enter.
